A) Introduction to NSDL:

  1. National Securities Depository Limited (NSDL) was the original and biggest depository in the world when it was set up first.
  2. Established in August 1996, NSDL runs an extremely well-equipped infrastructure for dematerialized security handling in the Indian capital market.
  3. NSDL was created as per the provisions of the Depositories Act of 1996 to eliminate paper settlements.
  4. NSDL provides depositories that resemble a depository account in which securities are held like bank accounts, allowing for the seamless transfer of ownership through account transfers. This proxies a risk-free zone by way of not going that route of risk with paper transactions, allowing the costs to be borne economized.

B) Business Partners and Functions

NSDL? The scope of business is branched into various business partners, such as:

  1. Depository participants (DPs): the DPs provide the depository services to investors on behalf of NSDL. From 3 DPs, NSDL has covered a nationwide presence.
  2. Issuer Companies along with their Registrars and Share Transfer Agents.
  3. Clearinghouses of stock exchanges enable the settlement of trades made on stock exchanges for dematerialized shares. Major clearing houses will always be in electronic touch with NSDL.

C) Market Presence:

  1. Client Accounts: More than 3.57 crore active client accounts. An increase from 2.17 crore in 2021. NSDL along supports its extents.
  2. Geographical Coverage: Working in 2,048 cities and towns, in 99.31% of all pincodes. This is a clear projection for its nationwide coverage.
  3. Market Influence: Managing the demat custody for value of ₹423.44 lakh crore (approximately US$ 5079 billion), comprising NSDL’s significant influence over the Indian capital market, in terms of 281 DPs and having on boarded 46,015 companies; NSDL averaged 5,270 new accounts opened daily since November 1996.
  4. Number of Deposit Participants (DPs): NSDL has a network of 281 DPs, showcasing the wide partnership it has.
  5. Number of Companies Joined: Joined by NSDL are 46,015 companies underlining and at the same time giving the feel of wide industry integration.
